Happy Birthday Chase...You are 3!!

3 years ago today it was Memorial Day and Chase came into our lives 5 weeks early. He was planned for 4th of July, but picked the next closest holiday and surprised us. Chase is a shy, sweet, easy going, sometimes feisty little boy. His big, brown eyes & smile light up any room! He is a complete joy to be around and is so much fun to watch. He loves swimming, riding 4 wheelers, playing outside w/ his brother & cousins. He loves driving the toy truck we have (and is quite a good driver!).

Chase's Favorites:

Swim lessons w/teacher
Nursery teacher (Darla Johnson)
Mario Kart Wii
Reese's Peanut butter cups
Chuck E. Cheese (you call it cheese hug)
Daddy
Julie's house & your cousins
You love people to "get you" (People to chase you around the house).
You love to play fight
Riding in the back seat of the car
Playing baseball outside w/ Dad or Grandpa
Grandma's house
Kate's house
Riding on 4 wheelers or scooters

Chase we love you and are so grateful to have you in our lives!

Happy Birthday!

Wicked

We got to see Wicked while were were on our trip to San Fran. Here are the few pictures I took of us in San Francisco. For my birthday Adam bought tickets to Wicked. We had a really great time! Even Adam liked Wicked. He's not one for the arts, unless sporting events are considered part of them.

Pink Eye

Poor Chase came down with some REALLY bad pink eye. He woke up and his eyes were swollen, & crusted shut. We could not get them open for an hour after he got up! Even then we were only able to get one of them open...and then finally the other one opened up too.

A Morning with Bob and Marty

We just got back from San Francisco. One of the mornings there I was out for a walk along a coastal trail. I was trying to scope it out for my next mornings run. I was just enjoying the view and the walk when the trail abruptly came to an end. It picked up somewhere else I just didn't know where. To my left were some cliffs overlooking the beach and a red truck parked there, which kinda freaked me out because I was pretty far from civilization. It was also a foggy, creepy morning on the beach, one that you would see in a vampire movie (Twilight, or if you are old school Dark Shadows). There were two men in the parked truck, but I tried not to look or make eye contact in fear they were plotting my demise. So I walked to the cliffs edge to look around, then picked up my cell phone to call Adam so if they really were planning my demise I would be on the phone and he could know. The only problem...which I knew would more than likely happen...Adam doesn't pick up. He is in meetings and I am stuck on some creepy cliffs with men I don't know, and no one will ever know what happened to me. I leave a goodbye message for him, telling him I love him and the boys etc. I also tell him where they can look for me. Follow the coastal trail until it abruptly ends and look to the left where there are some cliffs...start the search there. After the message I pretend to stay on the phone a little bit longer. At this point the men have gotten out of the truck and are getting ready to do something. Now I get a good look at them, and they are two very nice looking ( nice as is in countenance nice) men in their 50's-60's with a really beautiful dog named Lily. They yell over to me, "Looking for a way down?". I said, "Yea don't really feel like jumpin' today". They said, you can follow us down the fisherman's trail if you want. At this point I know they are neither creepy, or plotting my demise, so I think to myself what the heck go check out the beach. So I did. And so starts, "A Morning with Bob and Marty".

Bob & Marty are friends who live in Grenada 4 miles north of Half Moon Bay. They come to the beach when the tides are low looking for rocks, shells, driftwood, and other treasures for their yards. Bob is retired and Marty is an Electrician in San Francisco. They taught me all about looking for these little treasures. They find fossilized rocks, that have seashells embedded into them and other really beautiful things. They have been doing this for years and love it. They know exactly what they are looking for, and where to find it.
I know this might seem crazy to some people, spending a morning with complete strangers. But I have to tell you how much fun I had. I also learned a few things that morning with Bob and Marty (besides how to find treasure in tide pools, and along the beach). Here are a few of the thoughts that I had that morning while walking along the beach with Bob and Marty:

It's amazing what you can find when you know what you are looking for. That was huge for me. It was like an AHA moment. Many times I don't even know what I want, or what I am looking for. Then am disappointed when I don't find it. Well...I realized I need to know what I want before I go start looking for it.

There is treasure all around us. It is all about perspective. How hard are we looking? And are we recognizing all the treasure there is? I am talking about more than just monetary treasures.

We are surrounded by people and opportunities daily. Many times, whether we are too scared, too busy, whatever the case may be...we miss out. I could have went about my day without the experience with Bob and Marty. I would've never known what I missed (sadly). But because I had a conversation with two complete strangers, I had a great morning, and I went away with more than just a few rocks and sea shells. The Lord finds many different ways to teach us...many times we are just not listening, or too busy to see that He's trying to talk to us. I am now trying to be more open to His wisdom and counsel.

When looking at the beautiful, smooth, tiny, rocks along the seashore I thought to myself. How long has it taken them to get this smooth? What did they look like before? How jagged were their corners, how rough were they? Now after many years of being refined by the ocean currents they are these beautifully smooth rocks that come in sorts of colors and textures. Some of them you can see their layers. I wondered what it took for them to get where they are today. Then I wondered what I will look like like once all my jagged edges have been smoothed?

I also learned that sea glass is a HOT commodity in the "searching the tide pools" business. Especially blue sea glass. Not just any blue sea glass but the smoother, more refined the more valuable. That was interesting to me because I would've considered that junk. But what was once someones junk tossed into the ocean, after days, months, probably years of being tossed about in the ocean, eventually shows up onto the seashore as treasure. We are a lot like blue sea glass, and the world is our ocean, someday we will end up on our "sea shore" as someones treasure...what will we look like?

Anyways...it was a really great morning.

Treadmill Accident

Jonah had an accident with the treadmill.

The rule in our house is that you don't play on the treadmill (including adults...at least you'd think that was the rule, because it never gets used!).

We had some friends over, and the rule was overlooked (surprise, surprise). I heard blood curdling screams come from downstairs and lo and behold there is Jonah writhing in pain because he had been playing on the treadmill, fell off, got stuck between the wall and the treadmill.

In the mean time there is Chase turning up the speed higher and higher causing the treadmill to burn even harder & faster.

There are reasons for rules. Usually, it is for our own good, or safety. But sometimes, we have to get burned (maybe even a few times before) in order to learn something.

Just another day raising boys.

Jonah's Gift

I am not proud of this I admit, and maybe this is too much information...but those of you who know me well, know that I share way too much information all the time! So here it goes...I...am...a...picker. There I said it. I am a picker. I am not talking about nose picking. I enjoy to pick at things (except dead skin on sun burns. I have to draw the line somewhere=). It is not my finest attribute but nonetheless an attribute I do have. Anyways, the point of me sharing all of this less than desirable information is as follows. As I was putting Jonah to bed after the reading and prayers. I usually will lay by him for awhile, and this is where I get some of my best information & quotes from him. This is where he talks to me about his day, about what he's thinking, all sorts of good stuff. It is one of my favorite times of the day. As we were laying there he says this to me,"you can pick at my scratchy things on my arm if you want, since you had your birthday a few days ago". You have to know too that Jonah despises when I try to get his scratchy things (what we call them) on his arm. You also must know that this picking thing is something I don't even realize I am doing. If my hand even touches something that needs to be picked, I automatically pick without even knowing. Really I am the victim here. It must be genetic. Anyway my heart truly was full tonight to know that my son was willing to sacrifice letting me do something he really hates for his birthday present to me. Now that is what I call REAL love. And just so you know...I did not pick. Now THAT too is love. If only the world could be filled with more of that kind of love.

Some "Jonah Quotes" from the last two years...

May 10, 2009 - "When you were little was it the old days?...or when your Mom was little was it the old days?".
I then asked him what he thought, thankfully he replied, "When your Mom was little".
(I am just not ready to be part of the "old days")

"I think girls are more specialer than boys...that's why they get to have the babies".

9/12/07 - "Mom can you go up in space with me when I get older?, because I don't know how to get up and down, so can you go with me?"

8/24/07 - "Do you have the army's phone number?". "Can you teach me the Army's phone number in case of an emergency?".

8/23/07 - "Does it hurt when you die?". "Will you ask Jesus for me?".

After visiting the Jordan River Temple - "I miss Jesus, I wish we were up in Heaven with Him". Does that make Him happy?". "Do you wish you were up in Heaven with Him?".

April 12, 2009 We were reading in the Book of Mormon about the Liahona. - "We need to go buy one of those". "We should go to the Church store and get one". "Liahona's are really good".

"Do you know that flies love garbage? That's why they fly around stinky people. They like the smell".

"Girls always get to be the boss, because they want to be". "It's not fair, they always get to be the boss...you're the boss Mom".

5/29/08 - "When I grow up I don't know what my kids are going to look like or what toys I should buy them".

Praying- "...Bless the Holy Ghost will be inside everyone in the whole world..."
"...Please bless my pirate on Pirates of the Carribean (computer game)
that he will get to level 32..."

12/20/08 - "My Mom dates my Dad practically everyday".

"Hey Mom when we play can I just call you sidekick?".

Jonah on why Mom's were made: "So kids could have joy & happiness, so kids could be happy and not sad".

On how Mom's were made: "The Holy Ghost, and Mom's are made out of temples, skin temples...cuz everyone is made out of temples".

When I told him that one little kid said that Mom's were made with a stamp of mean:

"They said a stamp of mean?!...No, cuz you're really nice and beautiful".

"Who is Jesus' Grandma?".

Trick of the Day

Everyday when we leave the gym, we pass by the bike bars where people can park their bikes. Jonah a few months back started the "Trick of the Day", which is some new trick he does on the bike bars. Everyday he tries to make it different. But each day when we pass he'll say,"Look Mom trick of the day". Then I will usually comment with what a great trick etc. It is quite fun to watch and each day he gets a little bit more creative. Last night Chase & I went to the gym without Jonah because he wanted to stay home and play with his cousins. Anyways, as we are leaving the gym to go back home, little Chase runs to the bike bars and starts hanging from them (which is basically all he can do because he is so little compared to them); saying with his little voice that doesn't quite pronounce the words right, "look Mom trick of the day". But instead I think it sounded a little more like "Wook Mom chick a da day". How I love and look forward to the "Trick of the Day".

Mom Wook...

"Mom wook" were Chase's excited words as he grabs my hand and directs me downstairs to where he just won a game of Mario Kart on the wii. So as we both celebrated jumping up and down, slapping high 5's and shouting for joy I realized two very important things:
1. isn't it so GREAT and FUN to be a Mom and
2. Am I a bad Mom because my 2 year old can not only turn on the wii, operate it, but also win at
Mario Kart? I don't really know, but I sure did have fun celebrating with him.

Kindergarten is the new 16

"I don't know on what planet you think it's ok to talk to your mother like that...but it's not this one". I think were my exact words.
So, I know that 40 is the new 30...but what I didn't know was that 6 is the new 16!! As us old people are getting younger, so are children are getting much older.
Jonah, bless his little/big heart is such a great kid. But with all of his "greatness" comes some great challenges. Yes, I know that I am being paid back for all the turmoil I caused my own mother. I just didn't know what I was up against. This morning I realized that I am already dealing with a teenager...but this teenager is in KINDERGARTEN!!! Have 6 year olds always had attitude? is it because he is MY six year old? did my genetic makeup cause him to mature far before his time? or are plastic container's and microwaves the culprits of our children turning into much younger teenager's??!!! Somebody please explain this to me? Maybe Oprah and Dr. Oz can get together and have a show about this microwave and plastic container thing. Those two things are my only explanation. It certainly can't be the genes =).
I realized today that I don't think mentally I have ever fully entered into adulthood. I mean I am 34 years old, so by all means I should be mature enough. But I realized that adult's don't fight with their children like they are siblings. That is another show for Oprah, and Dr. Oz. So for today's lesson I have learned: Even after all these years, I still don't know very much...AND that it is OK, because I can still keep trying. At the rate Adult's are becoming much younger and children are getting much older our children are bound to teach us a thing or two.
